If you’re wondering ‘what do bed bugs look like?’, it might be because you’ve seen a few unidentifiable creatures scuttling around the house. Or maybe it’s because you read an article after seeing a new bite on your skin. It may even be because someone you know had bed bugs and now you feel like they must be everywhere. Notorious for being relentless and especially difficult to eliminate, we feel your pain. We also know that it’s easy to let yourself be consumed with where they are and whether you’ll ever be able to see them. Before you panic, it helps to have some information about what bed bugs look like and how you can stop them.

Bed Bug Identification

Bed bugs are brown when they’re full grown. However, they may look red if they’ve just eaten because they survive on blood. (Please note that while they prefer human blood, there has been evidence to show that they’ll go after pets too). Bed bug eggs are white and bed bug babies are either clear, white, or yellow. So those are the primary colors that you should be looking for. In terms of shape and size, full-grown bugs look a lot like apple seeds in that they’re relatively small and flat (unless they’re swollen from eating). Bed bug bites can be raised or flat, and are usually grouped together. They can also shed their skin up to five times in their lifetimes, so you may see brown specks throughout the house if you do have them. Other signs can include blood stains or musty odors.

Bed Bug Infestation Removal

Females can lay hundreds of eggs in their lifetime if they’re not stopped, and they can survive for months without any nourishment. When it comes to getting rid of them, it’s important to take care of the infestation once and for all. Unfortunately, bed bugs are excellent at hiding in areas of the home where you’ll never be able to see. Removal tactics can include everything from vacuuming any potentially infected areas (including individual pages of books and the underside of the mattress) and boiling objects to ensure all traces are removed. We highly encourage professional intervention though. Bed bugs don’t pose serious health risks to residents, but they can be a sign of more dangerous conditions  (e.g.,excess moisture in the home).
